A generalized three dimensional method of analysis has been presented to analyze metal forming problems using the slab method. So far only pain strain and axisymmetric bulk deformation problems have been solved by the slab method and the present formulation is an attempt to extend and generalize the method for the three dimensional problems. In order to formulate the new method forward extrusion of shaped sections has been chosen as the three dimensional forming example. As is the usual procedure in previous slab analysis formulation the force equilibrium is considered on a small element of slab in the deforming region. In the present method a generic slab has been considered so that in its geometrical representation all the parameters defining the deforming region were involved. In this way a three dimensional definition was derived for the slab. Based on the force equilibrium of the generic slab the new formulation was derived for the case of the forward extrusion of shaped sections and this formulation could be easily be applied to other metal forming problems such as drawing and rolling.
