Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) is a new MAC layer for metro ring networks. In this paper, we present a generic node design for RPR. The focus of this work is on the traffic management architecture. Fault tol-erance, recovery and topology discovery functionalities have already been matured and can be handled independently. A modular node open architecture and detailed process level design is developed in this work that is capable of incorporating all the proposed bandwidth management algorithms and buffering techniques within the general framework of Buffer Insertion Ring (BIR) technology. Well-define inter-module interfaces are defined so that each module can be implemented independently. We have imple-mented our design in OPNET and have validated its performance through extensive simulations.
