Design problem of Switched Reluctance Machines (SRMs) for high-performance drive applications depends on characteristics of other drive
components including electronic converter and control system. These applications normally need the best drive performance throughout a certain region of the Torque-Speed (TS) plane. This paper presents a design optimization methodology for SRMs taking characteristics of selected converter topology and control system strategy into account. The approach is here aimed at maximizing total drive efficiency throughout an operational region subject to some limited output torque ripple. Two types of curves obtained from FE analysis of SRM are used to establish the basis of novel SRM synthesis algorithms. These algorithms build main important parts of the proposed methodology. Then, the approach isapplied to designing a 35 kW, 3000 rpm, 12/8 SRM for an electric vehicle propulsion application.
