With the increasing use and availability of digital videos, shot boundary detection, as a fundamental step in automatic video content analysis and retrieval, has received extensive attention in recent years; But the problem of detecting gradual transitions such as fades and dissolve, especially in the compressed domain, has yet to be solved. In this paper, a new robust compressed domain fade and dissolve detection method is proposed, which is based on analyzing the macro-blocks’ prediction modes available at macro-block level in H.264 compressed video. Simplicity and direct working in the H.264 compressed domain with . high precision and recall are the main advantages of the novel algorithm. In addition, it is able to detect fades and dissolve simultaneously with the unified solution.
