Abrasion is an important property of rocks, which can provide betrer engineering judgment for planners and designers. It is dependent on the type and quantity of various constituents present in a rock parameter 10 assess the suitability of various equipment used in mine and civilonstruction projects e.g. Drilling machines, shovels. dumpers, excavators. etc. It adversely affects the penetration rate of drilling machine by wearing of the nit during relative movement of the cutting edge at constant surface of the rock. It also increases the magnitude of the thrust to maintain the degree of stress concentration at the cutting edge. If Abrasiviryproperly determined, it milnor only be helpful in designing the bit but t the same time it provide assistance for bit manufacturers to ensure better (hilling performance and provide assrstancc for bit manufacturers to ensure better drilling performance and provide longer life time of a drill bit It is considered to be a major impediment and main factor. which control the rate of wearing and ultimately affect the penetration rate.
There are number of methods to determine the abrasivity of rocks, e.g. Burbank test, Microbit drilling lest, Cercher test. etc. Each of the above-mentioned tests has certain merits and demerits. In the present paper. an attempt has been made to determine the physico mechanical properties of 12 different rock types and their abrasivity index. A correlation has been developed with physico mechanical properties and abrasivity parameter. The results indicate a close relationship between various strength properties and abrasiveness.
