Conventional analogue-type controllers are still widely used in power systems. In this paper first the shortcomings of such controllers arediscussed, then an optimal control system based on a linearised model is designed and compared with the conventional controller. The optimal controller performs much better than the conventional controller, but requires a detailed and accurate model which is not usually available and is based on the linearised model and can not perform well under different operating conditions. The fuzzy controller, designed based on recently developed fuzzy control theory, requires neither an accurate model nor linearisation. Nevertheless the simulation results show a gooderformance compared with the conventional and optimal controllers. Making the fuzzy controller adaptive, results in excellent performance with little computational effort, which makes it a good candidate for power system excitation control.
