Background: Some of the environmental bacteria are resistant to antiseptic components and can survive on dental instruments. These types of bacteria can cause infections in the human host.Thymus Vulgaris and Matricaria Chamomilla are well-known medicinal plants with biological activity. These plants have been widely used in traditional medicine for treatment.Methods: In the present study, ethanolic extracts of Thymus Vulgaris and Matrica Chamomilla were studied for in vitro microbial activity by agar dilution method. Also these extracts were evaluated for inhibitory effects on planktonic cells using Tetrazolium (0.2 %) microplate assay. Results: Both Bacillus safensis and Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633 were resistant to Thymus Vulgaris ethanolic extract. Matricaria Chamomilla ethanolic extract inhibited the growth of Bacillus safensis but had no inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6633. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of Matricaria Chamomilla extract for Bacillus safensis were 62.5 μl/ml and 500 μl/ml, respectively. Conclusion: We found that ethanolic extract of Matricaria Chamomilla has inhibitory effect on some spore-forming bacteria like Bacillus safensis. This extract can be used in antiseptic agents.
