چکیده:

A recently developed method based on changes of entropy rate of the machining process for chatter detection on lathe is demonstrated. For characterization of cutting dynamics, entropy rate which is a scalar value is normalized as in this form the entropy rate is independent of cutting conditions. A high value of the entropy rate is typical for chatter-free cutting while for chatter a low value is typical. A characteristic threshold is defined to specify the boundaries of stability. Experimental measurements are carried out by recording the tool vibrations and acoustical signals of a machining process. The capability of detecting chatter using these two signals are compared, and accuracy, sensitivity and reliability of entropy rate for an online chatter detection in turning is also examined.
