Zirconia has become a popular alternative to alumina as a bioceramic, because of its substantially higher fracture toughness and strength. The aim of this study was chemical synthesis and characterization of zirconia nanopowders for biomedical applications. 3 mol% yttria doped zirconia (3Y-TZP) nano-powders were synthesized using yttrium nitrate hexahydrate and zirconium oxychloride octahydrate via a simple sol-gel process. Synthesis parameters were optimized by varying the ratio of ethanol to water, stirring temperature, aging duration and calcinations time
