Water and Energy are essential commodities in a pulp and paper mill. Larger amount of water consumed and effluent generated within the mill, result larger energy required to heat, cool and pump these streams. Therefore, the interactions between mill water and energy usage should be analyzed together through a systematic analysis of mill energy and water consumption. A step-by-step retrofit approach was developed to address the issues of a combined thermal energy and water analysis. This new methodology combines the concepts of traditional energy pinch analysis with water pinch concepts to evaluate the potential for reducing steam consumption and decreasing the volume and temperature of aqueous pulp and paper mill effluents. In this article, the new energy and water management methodology Based on Pinch Analysis will apply to an Iranian Pulp and Paper Complex and steam and water saving potential will be recognized.
