Due to low cost and simplicity of combustion synthesis, in this research, the combustion synthesized TiB/Ti was evaluated in comparison sintered SiC specimens for use as seal ring in pump. Therefore wear behavior of TiB-24%wt. Ti samples was determined by pin on disk test against an AISI 52100 steel pin under dry condition. Microstructure observation with SEM and constituted phases were recognized with X ray diffraction analysis. In wear test, experimental results showed that TiB-Ti has friction coefficient lower than SiC in loads lower than 240 N similar working conditions. Also shows weight loss close to SiC in wear test. The density of the synthesized bulk samples was measured by using water, according Archimedes test method and both samples show low density. Also macro hardness results showed that TiB/Ti has hardness as high as SiC that is suitable for use in pumps. Therefore result showed that TiB/Ti has acceptable primary condition for evaluation in pump as mechanical seal rings.
