As demand for power grows fast, necessity arises in going in for large power stations. In this context, reliable links for evacuating bulk power assumes special significance. For establishing links with high level of reliability & availability, ease of operation and maintenance, safety of personnel and equipment, designer need to consider certain provisions. Planners need to adopt appropriate method for transfer of power optimally. This paper discusses the visual aspects, considerations for optimisation of sub-station layouts, provisions for improved reliability of EHV sub-stations and importance of sub-station automation. Also discusses the static field in sub-stations and results of field measurements carried out in 40OkV substations. Application and advantages of GIS sub-stations are also brought out.
Necessity of HVDC transmission in particular situations is brought out. Advantages of adopting series compensation for enhancing power transfer capability of lines are also discussed. Some specific cases of compensation relevant to India are discussed.
