Sensitivity analysis is a powerful tool employed to identify causes of the stability problems andweak areas, to tune control parameters optimally, and to locate compensating devices like capacitors and FACTS. In this paper, a new first order eigen- sensitivity analysis is presented for ranking of voltage contingencies. In the proposed method, eigen-value based sensitivities are computed for various components of power system. By means of these sensitivities, severity of different voltage contingencies is determined. In this paper, we consider transmission system contingencies, but the method can be easily extended to other contingencies like generation contingencies. The proposed technique has been examined on two practical systems, IEEE 30 bus test system and Iran’s power network. Obtained results, discussed comprehensively, indicate the efficiency of proposed approach.
