In this study, critical submergence for an air-entraining vortex at vertical intake and the effect of anti-vortex plates in reduction the critical depth, was investigated experimentally.Dimensionless parameters describing free surface vortex flows are used in the analysis.The results of more than 200 tests indicate that, by using anti-vortex plates, the submergence can be reduced upto 60 percent, which, increases the efficiency of the intake system. Also parameters such as the angle of the plates relative to the flow, their positions and numbers (one or two), are other variables that can affect the performance of the plates, which are tested.
