The ability of Mechanically Switched Compensators (MSC) to contribute to damping of power oscillations is effected on their location in the power system. For controllable var components known as Static Var Compensators (SVC) the placement plays the decisive role. An effective application should be completed with the tuning of SVC parameters. In this paper two new methods to allocate var compensators for damping improvement arepresented. The first method based on sensitivity matrices is used for placement of MSC.For allocation of SVC the effect of the input and output signals of SVC should be considered. A novel approach based on Minimum Singular Values (MSV) of appropri ate matrices is presented which makes it possible to define Siting Indices (SI) for every busbar in the system. The proposed methods are applied to a test system to investigate the efficiency.
