Data mining is a process to search for valuable information in large amount of data. Typically, this process includes data collection and integration, data exploration, data preparation for mining, model building, model validation, and performance evaluation. Statistics can and should play a significant role in each step of this process. This article uses four case studies to introduce this process. In addition, a comparison study on statistics and data mining is reported.
