چکیده:

Background: Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) compounds are components of motor vehicle fuel. BTEX are released from exhaust of vehicles and also evaporated from the fuel tank, carburetor and crank case of engine. BTEX are dangerous chemicals by themselves and they also participate in photochemical reactions and produce secondary air pollutants such as ozone, peroxyacethyl nitrate, free radicals and nitrogen oxides. BTEX in ambient air of metropolitan area has been subject of many studies by the elaborate EPA’s method. Measurement of BTEX in the ambient air of Iranian major cities due to inadequate sensitivity of available gas chromatography systems in range part per billion(ppbv), have not been studied.
