Objective: Silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) have been known to have bactericidal and fungicidal effects. However, at present no information is available on the interaction of nanosilver with fish pathogens. To fill this gap, effects of colloidal silver nanoparticles on invitro growth of fish pathogenous species of Saprolegnia sp. was investigated.
Method & Materials: The antifungal activity of silver nanoparticle was evaluated by determining the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) by using two-fold serial dilutions of colloidal nanosilver in GY-agar at 22ºC. The growth of Saprolegnia sp. was compared to the growth on nanosilver-free agar controls.
Results & Conclusion: Results showed that silver nanoparticles had inhibiting effect on in-vitro growth of the fungi. The MIC range of silver nanoparticles for Saprolegnia sp. was between 1600 and 1800 ppm. These results suggested that silver nanoparticles could be a useful material to provide new antifungal activity in aquaculture systems as a replacement of teratogenic and toxic agents such as malachite green.
