One of the most important processes in manufacturing parts is on-line dimensional measurements and quality assurance. Dimensional measurements using common devices such as micrometers and mechanical gauges are common in manufacturing industries. These devices are not as accurate and they can produce errors. The paper looks into the structure of modern measurement devices and introduces design and development of an electronic and software based measurement system with accuracy of micron. The system implements a single distance measuring laser sensor and a V-base block, for measuring external diameters of shafts on-line. A software system then takes the output data from the measuring device and produces various operator required data analysis and presentations. Design techniques as well as input and output characteristics of the system are discussed.
