In recent year numerous different dissipative systems have been proposed and some structures have been built or retrofitted with such devices. Most devices dissipate energy through hysteresis, friction or viscous damping. In all cases their behavior is highly This paper deals with the use of friction damper as a passive dissipative device non-linear. in order to seismic retrofit of existing structures design criteria and seismic analysis of a building. As an example a 3-story building is designed and retrofitted using friction damper. The structure is modeled using the finite element program Sap2000 and is analyzed using both non-linear static pushover analysis and non-linear time history analysis.
