چکیده:

This paper describes the results of geological-geomechanical investigations, rock mechanics studies and bearing capacity estimations carried out at the proposed Khorram-Roud dam site in the west of Iran. Rock mechanics studies conducted in the study area include surface geology, joint study, borehole drilling, and field and laboratory geotechnical testing. Different rock mass classification systems such as rock mass rating (RMR), Q-tunneling index, rock quality designation (RQD) and dam mass rating (DMR), applied to classify and characterize the rock masses, provide a basis for estimating deformation and strength properties, supply quantitative data for design, and constitute a platform for communication among exploration, design and construction groups. Goodman’s bearing capacity approach is used for dam foundation stability assessment, and both Mohr-Coloumb and Hoek-Brown empirical failure criteria are used in the analysis. The dam foundation bearing capacity is adequate, and based on this study, recommendations are proposed for a more detailed stability investigation, as well as a program for impermeation and consolidation grouting. In conclusion, the site appears suitable for construction of a rock-fill dam.
