Regarding to the problems which may arise during optimization of all parts of an earth dam simultaneously, it is more convenience to optimize each part separately by considering the effects of other parts on it. In this paper, a numerical approach for geometry optimal design of clay cores in embankment dams is proposed. The problem usually leads to desired design with minimum possible volume of core materials. A genetic algorithm has been employed to fulfill the design. This algorithm, judiciously, searches for optimal design among the problem space. While the algorithm searches, some constraints such as seepage and settlement are considered. In order to determine the value of seepage and settlement through the different kinds of designs, finite element method is used. The results show that a general optimal shape of core can be achieved for embankment dams.
