High voltage substations exist of many components with definite functions. In case of designing, planning and erection, all components have to be coupled in a proper way. During operation and maintenance sometimes it is necessary to go in detail functions of’components andubsystems. CAE-systems are suitable to support engineers for example in the field of design, erection, operation, maintenance etc. – to handle a lot of technical documents in an easy way. The only way to guarantee potential for increasing productivity and quality is by putting the correct systems to logical use. Yet this can only be accomplished if substations are modularized and standardized both in design and implementation. The optimal application of computer-controlled planning tools augments the quality of design and erection. Furthermore if the data records can be used in the field of operation and maintenance, an additional economic effect regarding safety and reliability can be reached. The paper presented here describes the actual state of using CAE-tools for design and implementation on an example of an IRAN power distribution project. Furthermore the increasing importance of modularisation and standardisation of substations is discussed.
