Traditionally fracture surfaces are assumed smooth and parallel however, natural fractures are characterized by rough surfaces and complex fluid flows. The flow on a real fracture surface is very unevenly distributed along the fracture plane. Therefore, the parallel plate approach is inadequate in describing flow through the fracture. In this paper we present an understanding of the role and effects of fracture roughness on fluid flow in a single fracture and the various methods of modeling fracture roughness surface in the literature
