Nanostructured and mesoporous TiO2-Er2O3 thin film gas sensors with various TiO2:Er2O3 molar ratios have been prepared by a new straightforward particulate sol-gel route. XRD and TEM analysis of powders revealed that the Er2O3 introduction retarded anatase-to-rutile transformation, crystallisation and crystal growth. Furthermore, the specific surface area (SSA) was enhanced by introducing Er2O3 into TiO2. Thin films produced under optimised conditions showed excellent microstructural properties for gas sensing applications. They exhibited a remarkable response towards low concentrations of CO (25 ppm) and NO2 (0.5 ppm) gases at low operating temperature of 200ºC.
