Expanded-bed adsorption (EBA) is a novel technique for primary recovery of proteins and nanoparticle bioproducts starting from unclarified broths. This process is an integration process which combines centrifugation, concentration, filtration, and initial capturing of the bioproduct in a single step. Here streamline adsorbent was loaded into 1 cm column and subjected to hydrodynamic comparison with 1.6 as well as 2.5 cm fluidized bed contactors.the hydrodynamic characteristics (N, D a x i and B º )of 1 cm column demonstrated a minimal mixing which is desirable for Macromolecular (e.g ,enzyme,protein)as well as Nanoparticle bioproduct (e,g ,plasmid DNA ,virus)purification. This contrasted with that of 2.5 cm column , which deteriorated within the same range of study. The generic effect of column diameter on liquid mixing and subsequently bioseparation performance in such integrated processes is discussed .
