This paper applies some of the elements of job design to a software design-engineering job in a small start-up environment . It focuses on examining available tools and adapting them to the needs and requirements of a small firm. At the end , it provides recommendations on how to move forward to improve the job conditions. The paper starts by analyzing the job of a design engineer in a young technology based firm . the firm develops software for wireless applications and has been in business for less than a year . the small size of the firm, its young age and lack of adequate financeal resources creates a unique mixture of challenges to the job design process . the goal is to identify areas where small changes can impact the job of the engineer positivety and allow him/her to be more productive adn satisfied with work. the scope of the recommended remedies is focused to avoid significant financial strains and work interruptions during implemention. this focused approach increases the likelihood that, the firm’s management and employees adopt the recommendation.
