Matt Matele – ABB Power Systems Ludvika Sweden
The ever increasing difficulty to build new overhead transmission lines (OHTL) is forcing electric power utilities to upgrade the existing lines due to difficulties to procure new Right of Ways (ROW). The following topics will be dealt with in this paper: -Conversion of existing AC 0HTL to HVDC to increase power substantially. -Increase of power on existing 0HTL by the use of series compensation and SVC equipment. -Replacement of existing AC 0HTL with a new Compact AC or a DC line to transfer large quantity of power.. The above methods are still far cheaper than the use of under ground cables to transmit the same amount of power.
