چکیده:

This contribution describes a detailed model for the prediction of the particle size distribution (PSD) in an emulsion homo-polymerization. The model uses the population balance equation (PBE) as a framework for the PSD and detailed mechanisms for the chemical and physical phenomena. Nucleation and growth phenomena are elucidated which play a vital role in the evolution of the PSD. The model can be extended for
processes which contain coagulation phenomena. The partial differential equation describing the PBE is discretized using orthogonal collocation on finite elements. The simulation of PSD evolution under semi-batch conditions is illustrated.
