Energy Management System (EMS) is the thinking brain of a power system control center. The presented recommendations through EMS have the key role in the efficient, reliable, and economy operation of power systems. But ever growing size of power systems and new requirements moreover advanced computer technologies cause to basic changes in the EMS structures from their first appearance in the 1970s. Distributed architecture is a well-known strategy for accommodating the EMSs with the time requirements, of course, by involving open systems criteria. Such architectures are LAN-based version of traditional EMSs and called Distributed EMS or DEMS. Nevertheless, the new challenges are coming continually, which make the web-based EMSs, essential. They are needed for satisfying the real-time constraints and an integrate operation, as well. This paper, meanwhile clarify a general model of an EMS and its functionalities, have a comprehensive view on the different design and implementation aspects of a DEMS. Web-based EMSs and related computational techniques (diakoptic) are the other topics of this paper. So, it can be set forth as a worth tutorial for who are interested in novel power system operation approaches.
