In this paper, optical diagnostics, based on combined digital imaging and spectroscopic technique, were applied in-cylinder of an optically accessible diwsel engine. The engine was equpped with a programmable electronic controlled common Rail system to manage the injection pulses and the dwell time in between. High-speed imaging allowed to follow the diesel process from the fuel injection to the exhaust phase through the combustion phase. On the other hand, spectral mneasurements of the flame emission in the ultraviolet visible range have shown to be a powerful tool for the derailed analysis of auto ignition and soot formation and oxidation. The optical measurements were performed varying injection parameters in order to evaluate the effect of control strategies on in-cylinder process.
