The direct conversion of sunlight intoelectricity is a forward-looking technology tosafeguard the energy supply and reducepollution. This paper uses an ant colony metaheuristicoptimization method to solve theredundancy optimization problem (ROP). Itdeals with optimization of multi statesphotovoltaic production system concerningredundancy optimization problem using acombined ant colony system and universalmoment generating function. The ant system searches for the maximum reliability solution by selecting the appropriate components for a series-parallel system, given a minimum system reliability constraint. The general instant generating function is used to estimatethe system reliability rate during calculations. An ant colony optimization algorithm for the ROP is devised on a well-known suite of problems from the literature. It is shown that the ant colony method performs with little variability over problem instance or randomnumber seed. It is competitive with the bestknown heuristics for redundancy allocation. A photovoltaic production system is deal with in order to clarify the efficiency of the approach.
