This paper illustrates the application of Dynamic Programming for optimum design of transmission lines. The objective of the optimization is to achieve minimum construction cost for the entire line, while meeting design criteria such as ground clearance, maximum and minimum structural loading and conductor constraints. The optimization process is applied for the design of an 500 kV line and results are compared with those of the manual graphical design. Comparisons of over 50 case studies (more than 200 km of line) show a 5 to 20 percent reduction in construction cost, with an average saving of 10 percent.
