Known primarily as a navigation system, the Global Positioning System (GPS) is also usedto disseminate precise time, time intervals, and
frequency. Precise timing offers a new approach to system wide controls. It enables measuring the system wide AC phase as well as timing events and synchronizing controls. The GPS is the first system to provide timing with enough precision to make this practical approach. GPS also provides the wide area of coverage, continuous availability, and high reliability required for power system control. Because of GPS receivers error sources are time variant, it is necessary to remove the GPS measurement noise. In this paper, two Kalman filters have been applied to GPS receivers time data for modeling of their time error sources. First method estimates GPS receivers time error from their previous values. In second method, GPS receivers time error is estimated using modeling of their position errors. The efficiency of each method is illustrated by
estimation simulation. For real-time restitution of GPS time accuracy, proposed methods are implemented on designed hardwares. The
experiment test results on collected real data emphasizes that time RMS errors of each method reduce to less than 59nsec, 69nsec,
respectively.
