This article presents a new method to develop spherical hydrogel-based reservoir controlled-release systems. Hollow beads of interpenetrating network (IPN) of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were synthesized using Ca-alginate as polymerization mold. Then, synthesized IPNs werehelated. The average diameter and membrane thickness of dried hollow beads were 2.92 mm and 173 mm , respectively. Acetaminophen and Diltiazem HCl were used as low-water-soluble and water-soluble model drugs. Drug loading was carried out using injection of drug solution into the cores ofhollow beads. Loading level measurements showed that, while the new method increases drug loading level of low-water-soluble drugs it decreases drug loading level of water-soluble drugs. Therefore, in vitro release tests were only carried out for acetaminophen as a low water soluble drug.
