This paper presents the regenerative chatter analysis for turning operation from a new perspective in which the frequency domain analysis is employed based on the Nyquist stability criterion and Bode diagram characteristics. In this study, the concept of the gain margin is used to identify the chatter frequency and the critical depth of cut. In addition, the results obtained from the proposed approach are compared with traditional chatter analysis methods including the stability lobe diagram (SLD) and the Root Locus analysis at four representative spindle speeds to show the conformity of the methods. Finally, the conceptual relationship between the metods are described, and it is shown that the lobes of the SLD and the branches of the root loci have the same physical concept as the encirclements of the Nyquist plots.
