Objective: Streptococcus iniae is globally distributed throughout warm water finfish aquaculture and has become one of the most serious aquatic pathogens in the last decade causing high losses in farmed and freshwater finfish in warmer region. Antibiotic usage is the easiest way and a current practice for reducing mortality and consequent economic loss.
Method & Materials: In this survey eight strains of S. iniae isolated from diseased rainbow trout during 2006-2008 from Fars Province were
subjected to ten different antibiotic discs on Muller-Hinton agar.
Results & Conclusion: Results showed that S. iniae isolates resisted tetracycline and oxytetracycline significantly while quite sensitive to ofloxacin, vancomycine, trimethoprim, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, clarithromycin, ampicilline and enrofloxacin. Thus, the resistance of S. iniae to those two antibiotics could be due to the antibiotics misuse in aquaculture practice.
