The main purpose of this study is to obtain a vulnerability curve of buried concrete pipes. Since there were not buried concrete pipes in Kobe water system experienced the damage during the 1995 Kobe Earthquake, we have obtained the necessary data based on the damage data of sewerage system in Kobe City and her vicinities during the Kobe Earthquake. Damage data for different diameters and materials of buried pipes were given in each ward in Kobe City based on statistical analyses. We have calculated the vulnerability curve related to ground velocity and acceleration. We found that the damage ratio in a concrete pipe is better correlated with ground velocity than acceleration. A standard vulnerability curve has been obtained for buried concrete pipes with diameter 250 to 300 mm which have the longest stretch in Kobe sewerage system and it was modified by suitable correction coefficients for diameter, material and liquefaction effects.
