چکیده:

This paper presents the design of a Knowledge Based Material Handling System (KBMHS) used for transporting part types between machining centres and load, unload stations. The KBMHS is one of the modules of the Knowledge Based Flexible Manufacturing’ System Design (KBFMSD), which is able to design a complete FMS.A hybrid knowledge base and an optimization approach for the selection of the Material handling System (MHS) and reduction of handling cost is used. Depending on the input parameters, the knowledge base selects suitable material handling systems for transportation of parts between loading, unloading and machining centres, while the analytical part finds the optimal handling cost and cost of the MHS. The KBMHS is developed in AM: an expert system shell. The application of the system is demonstrated with the help of an example
