چکیده:

Objective: Clove oil is now widely used as a safe and eco – friendly anaesthetic agent in fishes, but there are few studies on its probable side effects. The aim of this study was to study side effects of clove (Eugenia carryophyllata) oil on some organs of common carp (Cyprinus carpio).
Method & Materials: One hundred common carps (average weight 1350 grams) were captured and transferred to four cleaned and disinfected glass aquaria (2000 liters each) in adequately aerated water, located in Veterinary Medicine Faculty, Tehran University. Fishes were kept under adequate water quality at 20±۲ degrees centigrade, for at least 7 days before experiments began. All fishes were offfeed during experiment period. After acclimization, all fishes were anaesthetized as followed: A group (n = 25) at concentration of 200 ppm (double recommended dose), and two groups (n = 25 each) with 100 ppm (recommended dose), of clove oil.
Results & Conclusion: There was no microscopic abnormality observed in tissues of liver, spleen, kidney and gill of control and anaesthetized fishes, but slight hyper-anemia in mesencephalons of some fishes at concentrations of 100 and 200 ppm of clove oil was seen. The results showed that anaesthetization by clove oil has no harmful effects on the vital organs of common carp.
