Hyaluronic acid is a linear, unbranched polysaccharide made of alternating N-acetyl- and D-glucuronic acid. The polymer has been produced in a number of research D-glucosamine works by Streptococcus zooepidemicus using batch, fed-batch and continuous cultures. However, the literature is very sparse in terms of modeling and optimization of the process. In this research an unstructured model has been developed to simulate the process. Experimental data that has been published by other researchers have been employed to estimate the model parameters and to validate the model predictions. Monod and Haldan kinetic equations were used in the model. Genetic algorithm optimization method was applied to estimate the model parameters. The comparison between simulation results and experimental data indicates that the model can predict the process reasonably well. The model error for fed-batch culture was 46% less than the error of a structured model proposed by Johns’s group.
