This work presents systematic approach to building empirical rate of penetration (ROP) models from conventional and routinely available daily progress data of southern Iranian oil fields (Ahwaz oil field). For a given bit run, the approach generates a modeling relating ROP to applied drilling parameters such as depth, weight on bit, RPM, equivalent circulating density, bit wear, bit hydraulics, and hydrostatic head without prescribing the form of the relationship
