Steel Sheet Piles are used worldwide for more than 80 years in a most wide range of applications. As predestinated construction method, the typical and most important domain of permanent sheet pile use are Port and Harbour structures.
The paper gives a comprehensive overview on the different steps involved in the execution of a state-of-the-art quay wall structure with emphasis on the design of the sheet pile element, and the different possibilities to comply with the specific project requirements. Going along with the always more demanding technical and economical requirements of the different quay wall structures, also new developments in sheet pile technology are required and to be implemented. Major new steps in sheet piling are presented.
The undoubtful success of steel sheet piles in port and harbour structures and the encouraging outlook for its increased use in the future, is also, and not for the least, based on the close interaction of the Sheet Pile manufacturer, accepting its active role as reliable partner, with Port
Authorities and Owners, Consulting Engineers and Executing Contractors.
