چکیده:

In this paper the problem concerting an underpass called the Vavan underpass situated 15Km south of Tehran on the Tehran-Qom motorway is explained. For the past 25 years almost since first opening of this very important motorway this cloverleaf type junction due to relatively high ground water table (GWT) and lack of a drainage system provision, has had major problem with closure due to ponding of water , serious damage to the pavement structure , lack of surface regularity, reduction in services level at this section and hance formation of long traffic queues and cause of death to several people through either tying to swim and dive in the ponded water or trying to pass across the busy motorway while the underpass was impassable. This paper explains four engineering solutions put forward in limited call for help to solve the problem and the author’s solution was chosen to be implemented . this was based on construction of a drainage system of French drain type using geotextile , gravel filter material, catch-pit manholes and electric pumps utilizing an intelligent control automatic system which can inform by telephone line any faulty appearing in systems operation to selected people as well as on site. The main advantages of the system are that it is flexible , easy and quick to construct, very cost effective about one tenth of other proposals and free from legal implications and safety problems associated with other proposal.
