Nanocrystalline of Zirconium oxide was prepared by hydrolysis reaction of ZrOCl2 solutionin the reverse micelle system. Bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinite (AOT) and toluene were used as surfactant and organic phase. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, specific surface area and pore size distribution of the synthesized samples were determined. The results showed that the surfactant was effective to prevent the aggregation of nanoparticles and led to obtain nanoparticles with smaller crystallite size. Of interest is that the transition from monoclinic to tetragonal ZrO2 was occurred and tetragonal ZrO2 was thermal stable in room temperature due to the smaller crystallite size in the surfactant-templated samples in which the tetragonal to monoclinic ratio was higher than the other samples.
