The paper discusses about the voltage instability problems. It also presents as effective algorithm for controlling the reactive sources in such a way to avoid voltage instability. The voltage instability problems are categorized into two parts static and dynamic. While the former is fully discussed in the present paper, the latter is referenced and the need for dynamic modelling of loads, LTC, and reactive power sources are emphasized.The effect of AC/DC convertor operation on voltage instability are studied and a reliable region is determined for AC/DC convertor operation. This has been done by AC/DC load flow package, and it is shown that branches (stable and unstable) of P-V and Q-V curves can be obtained by changing the N-R algorithm procedure.
