This article addresses the effect of different surface modification of fumed nanosilica on the morphology of polyamide 6 (PA6)/ silica nanocomposites. Generally melt mixing of pristine fumed silica nano-particles with high performance polymers is not feasible due to sever shear heating and formation of particle aggregates. In this work, well dispersed nanocomposites based on polyamide 6 matrix filled with fumed silica (SiO2) has been obtained via melt compounding varying the filler surface modification with different silanes. The loading fraction ofparticles in all cases are 1.0 wt. %. The influence of chemical modification was assessed by comparison of the dispersed phase morphology of nanocomposites. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) revealed that silanes were absorbed and reacted with silica surface. Particles dispersion and aggregate averagesize were checked by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM) of nanocomposite’s cryogenically fractured surface. Improvements in dispersion of modified silica/PA6 nanocomposites were attributed to the silane polarity and its affinity with matrix polymer. The results showed that in the case of these nanocomposites fillerin-polymer interactions are more important parameter than filler-filler interactions obtaining a more uniform dispersion.
