Every few years, a new management method is developed which is believed to enhance business
performance. Change management approaches like BRP, JIT, TQM and Process innovation have
been among the wide spread routines. The historical analysis of these change management
approaches shows that eventually their popularity and applicability declines and they are replaced
by new methods which, although labeled differently, are in many views similar to their
predecessors. This paper investigates four management innovation and change programs
mentioned above and discusses how simulation modeling as a powerful tool for evaluating the
performance of complex systems could increase their effectiveness. It is argued that simulation
could be viewed as a missing link between these approaches.
