The increasing maintenance cost, inefficient operation, and the related high cost of electric utility consumption of the existing conventional chilled water plant at the Montebello Unified School District in Southern California has led to the necessary replacement of the cooling system and various alternatives are too be considered. In depth analysis of the cooling load indicates that the original 265 ton system is oversized by 30% for the existing conditions of the facility. The existing system is not energy efficient and the plants peak power demand occurs at the time that Southern California Edison charges are the highest. As the objective of this study, three alternative systems, namely, (i) replacement of the existing system with a 200-ton capacity system, (ii) full storage system, and (iii) partial storage system are simulated and complete economic and payback analysis is presented. The simulation results show that the full storage system is the most economically feasible alternative.
