This paper presents the results of an investigation for evaluating the potential for overvoltage transients and harmonic related problems which may result from the addition of a new transmission line to an actual substation and switching of a 10 Mvar capacitor bank at this substation. The EMTP program is used to simulate the proposed system. Specifically, the study is designed to evaluate (a) transient overvoltages resulting from normal energization of the shunt capacitor bank, (b) impact of transient voltages and currents from capacitor energization on existing devices, (c) harmonics at the shunt capacitor location, and (d) special requirements resulting from shunt capacitor application.
